PAISBOA, Boyer Sudduth Environmental Consultants and SCH Academy will host a one-day intensive Sustainability Teachers’ Academy training workshop on Thursday, August 16 for area independent school teachers and administrators. Teachers from all subject areas are welcome and will find opportunities to implement sustainability concepts and projects into their existing curriculum.

Led by experts from the Walton National Sustainability Teachers’ Academy at Arizona State University, this workshop will focus on sustainability science, how to teach relevant sustainability issues in the classroom and develop projects for the school and/or community. The workshop content is unique in sustainability education because it is built on research from ASU and other leading universities.

The instructors from Walton are considered national leaders, and their trainings are sought after by independent and public schools interested in research-based sustainability teaching strategies. Several PAISBOA members can recommend the training from personal experience:

“The Walton ASU training was a valuable experience for the teachers and administrators from GFS who participated. It served to help educate the GFS community in sustainability advocacy and education. Through a series of activities, the workshop leaders provided participants with an approach and vocabulary to use to engage others in topics surrounding sustainability without coming across as overbearing or preachy. They also demonstrated to us how we might be able to use economic arguments to approach administrators with sustainable solutions to institutional problems.”
Michael Kerns, Clerk of the Stewardship Committee, Germantown Friends School

“I participated in the one-day training provided by the Walton team at the Pennington School in New Jersey last summer. They shared hands-on activities that were engaging and could be adopted by teachers across the curriculum. They understand time constraints facing teachers and provided practical advice and research-based solutions that can help to jumpstart curricular connections to sustainability in any school setting whether you are getting started or leading sustainability efforts at your school.”
